Today I volunteered from 3 to 5! I enjoyed playing outside and playing uno with the students. Can't wait for next week!
To make up for lost time, I returned to volunteer the next day at the SOAR Jones Center location. On this day, I was put with the fifth graders this time. I met all of them at the beginning just by talking and playing games while they ate their snacks. We then went to the main room and did group members of the day with a couple of other announcements. I am slowly starting to learn the house chants one by one. After that, our group grabbed a kit at one of the classrooms. I forgot what they were called, but the students got to build an extraordinary construction mixed with science properties. Some students built a car that drove itself through the magnetic pull, some built an air pressure, and some built a different version of a ball launcher. After the time was up for their building time, they grabbed a book and started to read. I then said goodbye to the fifth graders and left.
After a week of being sick, I finally got to come back and work with SOAR again at the Jones Center. On this day, I was put with the third graders, where we first spent time water painting for Valentine's Day. After that, we then moved stations where the kids got to make and decorate boxes for the cards they would receive on Valentine's Day. Two of the kids and I started to play a dice game. Once they were done trying to get 1-6 on a die in a row, none of us succeeded, sadly, but we got close a couple of times. Then, to end the day, we traveled to another room where that group resumed watching Charolette's Web movie.
Today was another fun day at SOAR George! When I arrived I went to my permanent group that I was assigned. They are 1st graders with some kindergarteners mixed in. A little girl I met last time was working on a Valentine's Day card for her family, and I showed her how to draw a star. We drew and made cards for about 40 minutes, and then we cleaned up. Then we all went to the cafeteria to eat dinner. I sat with two girls who were telling me all about their siblings and the kinds of food they like. They were very excited when I told them I would be back every Wednesday at the same time. I hope next week when I go, more of them will recognize me and learn my name!
This week at SOAR Parson Hills my group got to have time in the gym and did a science activity. During gym time we used a parachute to play different games with the students. Afterwards we taught the students a science activity involving plates, water, and dry erase markers. They would draw on the plate and pour water on the drawing and it would float on the surface of the water. Overall it was a very fun week!
Today, I volunteered from 3:15 to 5:15. I enjoyed talking to all the kids and helping them in any way I could. I assisted with their activities, answered questions, and made sure everyone felt included. It was rewarding to see their excitement, and I learned a lot from the experience.
I spent an hour and a half yesterday at SOAR George volunteering. I was put with a group of 1st graders. I introduced myself and played with them. We watched The Lion King and colored together. When it hit 4:15 we went to the cafeteria and ate dinner. Then we did afternoon announcements and I left. It was very fun, and I can't wait to go again!
