I volunteered for the Memphis Rox Service on a Saturday. We helped clean up trash in the surrounding neighborhoods around the Memphis Rox building. This is going to positively affect residents of the community, because they will be able to have a community that is clean from trash. This was a group activity and we all tackled different spots. Having this group aspect made the job easier as well as more enjoyable. This service aligns with my personal beliefs, because I think it is important for the community that you live in to be clean. If the community is clean it will increase the pride for everyone who lives there, which can only lead to good things. I will definitely volunteer for this organization again because the process was smooth and the task was clear. I also align with what they are trying to do, so I will be back.
My service was environmental and we served the community near LeMoyne Owen College. I believe this service will allow the residents of the community to have a more aesthetically pleasing neighborhood. This will also protect wildlife in the area from ingesting waste that could harm them.
Did you work individually or as part of a team during your service? How did that
impact your experience?
I worked as part of a team and that impacted my experience greatly. If I had worked alone I likely would not have enjoyed my experience. Teamwork made the dream work. We each took turns holding the bags, and filled up 3 and a half bags of garbage!
What impact do you think your service had on you personally?
This service taught me why littering is so bad for communities. I rarely liter however after today I won't ever do it again.
Do you plan to continue volunteering with this organization? Why or why not?
I do plan on volunteering with this organization again! It was an amazing experience and I had a lot of fun. The organization was so welcoming and I can tell they were passionate about bettering their community.
My service benefitted the broader community by making the streets and roads look better and cleaner for more people to enjoy. My service was picking up trash/ littering around the area of the Memphis Rox Climbing building. This service will benefit plants, animals, and people by reducing environmental litter. The skill I developed through my service is teamwork because I had to work with a group of other emerging leaders, and we all had to take turns carrying the trash bags and picking up trash. Because I worked with a team as part of my service, the service was enjoyable and a bonding experience. I loved volunteering with this organization and will definitely do it again. It was a delightful experience on a beautiful day, and I loved getting to see and help the community.
This was an incredibly fun service event! I went with three other Emerging Leaders: Kenadi, Elizabeth, and Ashley. They made the service fun, and I loved spending time serving with them. They also helped me through the process, talking at times that I felt uncomfortable to talk. I can't wait to volunteer with this organization again because they were so kind and helpful. They are never rude when giving instructions or condescending when answering questions. Our service was picking up trash, which I feel is so satisfying because I hate litter and I love beautifying our city any way I can. When we were picking up trash, members of the community would approach us and thank us for the work we were doing. It was such a happy feeling to serve them.

1. My service benefits the members of Memphis by providing a clean neighborhood that may be neglected by the city.
2. I served the members of South Memphis by cleaning up trash from the streets and surround neighborhoods. As I and other volunteers were picking up trash, many cars honked at us or rolled down their window to say thank you and show appreciation for our work.
3. I developed communication skills in this service project since I was in a group with a freshman in college, senior in high school and two adults working for the Grizzlies. I had to communicate well differently because the age difference to get work done and get along.
4. The service did align with my personal values and beliefs since I do believe we should invest in the city than leave. Cleaning up as members of Memphis is going to benefit the city so it does not look trashed or abandoned and encourage others to invest in Memphis.
5. I think this service impacted me in a way that made volunteering fun! I think I’m going to volunteer more with this organization since I love the idea of picking up trash in Memphis to make it a nice place to live, walk, and enjoy the city’s beauty. I think if more organizations did this in several neighborhoods Memphis would be so much cleaner and better place to walk.
