I had the opportunity of spending the day with Windy. A skill that I learned while spending the day with Windy, would have to social awareness. I wasn't sure about how Windy would feel towards me and all I knew of her was based on someone else's experience. On this trip, I had to pay attention to how she reacted to being around others. But also her cues as well when we would. go walking. This role changed my perspective within the community in the sense that every dog is going to be different. Every dog is going to have different personalities. Those personalities can determine how they choose to react in an environment that they are not used to. Or being with a person that they have never been with before. During this experience, I did work individually with Windy. This was a bit tougher since she was a very energetic dog. I also think she would have benefitted from having someone else besides me to play with since she is such a friendly dog. I do plant to continue volunteering with this organization. I enjoy the dogs that I volunteer with. But also to allow different dogs the opportunity to get exposure to other people outside of Memphis Animal Services. A challenge that I faced was that Windy was a more energetic dog but the places I took her, she was very limited in what she was able to do. Also since it was just me and her I wasn't able to give her as much play time as she wanted.
What skills did you develop or improve through this service experience?
By planning out the route and planning with the dog I chose, I was able to improve my time management ability.
What did you learn about the community or environment you served?
I learned quite a lot! Going to the shelter reminds me of how many dogs are in our shelters across the city that need homes. We are currently facing some of the highest amount of animals in shelters, so being able to take one out for the day was very fulfilling.
Did you work individually or as part of a team, and how did that impact your
experience?
I went with two friends to complete the service, and that made the process of handling and taking care of the dog much more manageable.
Do you plan to continue volunteering with this organization? Why or why not?
Absolutely! I love dogs and I am not able to own one in my apartment. Being able to spend time with animals is always a highlight!
Did your service align with your personal values and beliefs? If not, how did you handle
any conflicts?
Yes! I am always an adopt don't shop advocate, and I love supporting any animal services anytime I can!
