At the V&E Greenline, I worked with fellow students of the University of Memphis as a team to help clean up the historic trail. Each of us worked together to cut limbs, rake leaves, and pick up trash. Our service directly impacts the residents of Memphis. The V&E Greenline is a place that has been kept up by 100% volunteer effort. Historically, the Greenline was a railroad that was abandoned leaving behind years of rich Memphis history. However, the residents of Memphis have turned it into a place for everyone to enjoy. By helping keep the Greenline kept up, we are continuing this legacy for all Memphians to enjoy. Overseeing this opportunity was Joshua First, President and Volunteer Coordinator. It was amazing seeing his passion for the city of Memphis and the Greenline. He educated us on the history of the Greenline and helped us every step of the way. During my time at the University of Memphis, I have volunteered here many times, and I plan to continue serving at this organization.
This event was awesome. I learned about how poison ivy looked and how certain plants needed to be cut due to it sucking up nutrients from other plants. I also learned how to cut off branches and dead plants. I met new students and one of the WoW leaders named Lily
It was nice to learn more about the green line and the different plant life that is growing there.
Very fun and informative
This service was cleaning up the V&E Greenline, particularly by cutting out roots and weeds that are damaging plants. We served the V&E Greenline and we received positive feedback even while we were serving, the plants need to be up-kept and the path is so large, they must rely on volunteers like us to keep it beautiful. This service supports the values of the UofM because it is keeping up interactions with the community and doing something larger than ourselves, driven by doing! I would love to continue volunteering for this program if I continue to stay at Memphis because it is a place I've volunteered for 3 years now, and it is always such a fun experience especially when your friends come and volunteer with you! This service aligns with my personal values because I enjoy helping out around places in the community that are in need. Coming together with not only other students at the UofM but also members of the Memphis community and getting to know why they volunteer is so rewarding.
My direct service helped benefit those members of the broader community because I along with other students helped clean up the Memphis green line in Midtown and this was to help the Memphis community enjoy the nature and beautiful trail here in Memphis. I served the Memphis Greenline community which is a nonprofit organization that helps take care of the trails. Through my direct service I helped better my gardening skills by learning how to trim back plants, bushes, limbs, and such. I also grew my team skills by working with a group of students as we all strived to reach the same goal which was to have the Greenline cleaned! I worked as part of a team with about 12 other students from University of Memphis. I loved working with a team, and it made my experience much more enjoyable, and I got to bond with people I only knew a little or never even met before! My services contributed to the overall mission and goal of the organization because I helped clean the Greenline for the Memphis community ad helped make it a fresher, more enjoyable place for Memphis citizens especially in the Midtown area, enjoy the beautiful nature as they take a walk, bike run, or whatever they would like to do as they enjoy the weather outside.
Super friendly staff and a great overall experience!
