    Emily @ Book Drive

My direct service benefited those of the broader community because the book drive would be helping children in need and by also giving them the chance to learn how to read and have books who can't afford them. We served the population of children and family's in the impoverished or poorer communities of Memphis. My service did align with my personal beliefs because I believe that we should give to not only our community in general but to those less fortunate as well. My service contributed to the overall mission and goals I was working with, Pi Phi, because they were able to serve reading for literacy which is the philanthropy of their sorority. What I learned about the community I served is that there are thousands of children in our nation who don't learn to properly read either because they are not given the resources/environment to learn, or cannot afford to buy books in order to learn how to read. By having book drives, we can help children learn how to read and given them books and resources to do so.

Emily @ Saint Mary's Soup Kitchen

My service benefited those of the greater community because I was able to serve the poor and help those in need in my Memphis community. My service did align with my personal values and beliefs because I am belief everyone is called to serve the poor. I also belief in giving to those in need whether that be your time, food, clothing etc. I learned that the community/environment I served are just people like we are. All the homeless want is for someone to talk to they want to be heard and understood just like everyone else. Whether they are suffering from mental illness, drug/alcohol addiction, and what not, we should welcome them with open arms and give of ourselves to them. Yes I plan to continue volunteering with this organization because I have served with them for a few years now and it is always so giving to serve the poor and be a smiling face to them.

    V and E Greenline

My direct service helped benefit those members of the broader community because I along with other students helped clean up the Memphis green line in Midtown and this was to help the Memphis community enjoy the nature and beautiful trail here in Memphis. I served the Memphis Greenline community which is a nonprofit organization that helps take care of the trails. Through my direct service I helped better my gardening skills by learning how to trim back plants, bushes, limbs, and such. I also grew my team skills by working with a group of students as we all strived to reach the same goal which was to have the Greenline cleaned! I worked as part of a team with about 12 other students from University of Memphis. I loved working with a team, and it made my experience much more enjoyable, and I got to bond with people I only knew a little or never even met before! My services contributed to the overall mission and goal of the organization because I helped clean the Greenline for the Memphis community ad helped make it a fresher, more enjoyable place for Memphis citizens especially in the Midtown area, enjoy the beautiful nature as they take a walk, bike run, or whatever they would like to do as they enjoy the weather outside.

    Warm Welcome 2023

My direct service helped benefit members of the broader community because I was able to help new students move into their dorms whether they had family helping or it was just them on their own. I served the broad Memphis community population for students from this area and from students all over the US. With the help of me and other students, the reaction of those students and their families was very grateful and appreciative. It was very giving to see a smile on everyone's face as we helped them! On me personally I think this impacted my mentality going into the school year. It reminded me of how it feels to be a freshman moving into a dorm and maybe with no one you know. It made me want to give to those new students more, which is partly why I became a wow leader in the first place. This service did align with my personal values and beliefs which is to impact our community and help others. It also aligns with my values of doing the right thing and helping make someone's day. Little gestures can go such a long way! The organization I was working with was Weeks of Welcome. Thid service contributed to the organizations goals and mission because I was a friendly face to all those incoming students, and I was there to help serve them in any way I could as they moved in. I was there to make it easier on the student and any family that was with them and help them with any tasks, or questions they had for me!

    Emily @ WOW move-in

During weeks of welcome move in, I along with other students were able to help move the new students into their dorms the week before school started. It was very giving to be able to serve my Memphis community and give back. It felt good to also know I was making a difference in student's lives and I could tell how appreciative and thankful they were for the extra help. I would do it again without a doubt!

Emily @ Saint Marys Soup Kitchen

When Volunteering at Saint Marys soup Kitchen, I was given the opportunity to serve the poor and homeless in the down town Memphis area, this past Friday morning. I helped make sandwiches, bag popcorn, and organize bins. I also helped prepare the soup, and hand the soup, and sandwiches out to the homeless that morning. It was a very giving and rewarding experience because being able to help those less fortunate means a lot to me because just little acts of kindness and gestures like what I did that day, can go a long way for people. It was nice being a smiling face to those in need and letting them know I care for them and I want to help in any way I can.

Emily @ Made care gift bags for staff at Lebonheur

It was giving to make goody gift bags for the staff at Lebonheur because I was able to show in a small way that the staff is greatly appreciated for all that they do there. I know that it will brighten their day and make them know that they are appreciate and loved for things that may go unnoticed to the naked eye!
