It was fun to help people.
The experience was very wholesome help the incoming freshman class move in was definitely an experience for the books. I was to do LLC on 8/22/23 from 10:45 to 1pm and sign the sign-up sheet.
I had a really good time meeting the new freshmen and helping them move in. They were all so excited and I am glad that I could be a part of something so bittersweet.
I helped several students move into their dorms. I got to help several parents find their way around campus and unload things to take the load off them. I also collaborated with other WoW leaders, and they helped me learn the importance of communication and teamwork. The most significant takeaway from this service opportunity was communication. It is important to communicate with people so that there is a clear understanding of things and organization. I plan to apply this learning to undergrad life and beyond because this helps me form my communication skills and prepares me for the real world. I engaged with many organizers of this event, and they were the advisors for the dorm I was in. They were very respectful at times when I was lost, and I also tried to help them in any way I could. I listened well to the people who were in charge of the event so that I could know what to do with the new students, and I wanted to help them in the best way possible. I engaged with several of the organizers because I wanted to know more about the move in process for students. I demonstrated a willingness to embrace new experiences because being a WoW leader is very impactful, and the skills i used during these events will be used later on in my career.
My direct service helped benefit members of the broader community because I was able to help new students move into their dorms whether they had family helping or it was just them on their own. I served the broad Memphis community population for students from this area and from students all over the US. With the help of me and other students, the reaction of those students and their families was very grateful and appreciative. It was very giving to see a smile on everyone's face as we helped them! On me personally I think this impacted my mentality going into the school year. It reminded me of how it feels to be a freshman moving into a dorm and maybe with no one you know. It made me want to give to those new students more, which is partly why I became a wow leader in the first place. This service did align with my personal values and beliefs which is to impact our community and help others. It also aligns with my values of doing the right thing and helping make someone's day. Little gestures can go such a long way! The organization I was working with was Weeks of Welcome. Thid service contributed to the organizations goals and mission because I was a friendly face to all those incoming students, and I was there to help serve them in any way I could as they moved in. I was there to make it easier on the student and any family that was with them and help them with any tasks, or questions they had for me!
So fun helping students move in. The bins are a nice addition to this year move in.
