We had to facilitate discussions with kids from high school and teach them more about social change and awareness.
I had the opportunity to tutor some kids and help out with after school activities.
I had to tutor a kid after school and help him out with his assignements.
I had to hand out stickers to anyone that walked into the Alumni Room.
I went into Elmcroft Senior Living without having booked an appointment with them and/or informing anyone of my arrival. It warmed my heart to see the staff of the this particular senior living be so warm and kind to not only the residents living in this home but also any visitor that walked in.
I got to work with people who were thrice my age and see how life is for them. I got to help them with their everyday workout, solve puzzles and crosswords with them, pick up pom poms for breast cancer awareness, fill up ballons for a staff activity, help out with snack time which was a "trip to Mexico". They had chips and salsa and some fun facts about Mexico.
Another thing that warmed my heart in particular was this old couple who were above ninety years old. They still clearly had so much love in their heart for each other and would repeatedly say the cutest things to each other all throughout that day.
I had a good talk with Mr. Perry, the sales director of Elmcroft Living and what it took to get his job. He gave me tips on how to make it through college and shared how it was like being in the military and how his time there helped him have a lot of the skills that he posses today. He also educated me a lot about jobs in the sales field and how to land them and that was helpful as it works towards my major.
Another shoutout goes to Mr. Philip, who was the activity manager and was kind enough to let me follow him around and basically shadow him for the day. He knew the names of all the residents, when they had their doctors appointments, how their family was, their background and told me a quick little story about each resident before we met them.
All together, I learned that patience and kindness shown to a stranger sticks with them for a really long time.
