This experience was valuable in the fact that I was able to help people in need. We bagged and gave out food to those who came to the mobile food pantry. I improved my conversation skills by talking to lots of different people with different experiences. This service made me more aware of the food insecurities in Memphis. I also learned that there are more companies than I thought that helped contribute. Target provided different kinds of things like gardening starters, pillows, candy, chips, and other goodies and sometimes Chikfila will come out and bring food to give out as well. I worked as part of a team, we were split into two groups one was packaing the food and the other was taking down everyones information. I was part of the group taking down information, we would get their name, address and number of people in the household so that we could make sure they got the right amount of boxes. I do plan to continue to volunteer for this organization they have helped so many people and while they only have 30 employees they have impacted so many lives and continue to do so. They not only have a food pantry but also a clothing drive and provide breakfast and a place to shower for those who need it. As far as challanges I faced there were some people who did not have the information cards to get their boxes so I had to fill out their paperwork in order for them to recieve their boxes and get a card for the future. In order to fill out the cards they have to have a tennessee ID and some people came without cards or IDs so they had to be turned away. But overall this was a great volunteering experience and the mission of this organizaition is one that aligns with me.

I volunteered for the Mobile Food Pantry. At this event we passed out food to those in need, in a drive-thru fashion. The people were in good spirits and I they definitely were appreciative for the food. This service aligned with my beliefs personally because I think the no one should be without food and this event gave me the ability to help in some capacity. We worked as part of a team at this event and this made everything a lot easier. We were able to make sure the line kept moving along while also meeting some other great volunteers. They were clear with their instructions when directing us on what we need to do. I would definitely recommend and I will volunteer here again.

What skills did you develop or improve through this service experience?
Through this experience, I improved my teamwork, communication, and time management skills. While loading food boxes into cars, I had to coordinate quickly with other volunteers to keep the line moving efficiently. I became better at working efficiently under pressure while still being respectful and helpful to others.

How did your service influence your understanding of social or environmental issues?
This service experience deepened my understanding of food insecurity and how many individuals and families rely on community resources for basic needs. Seeing the number of people who came for assistance made the issue feel much more real and urgent. It also helped me recognize the importance of organizations like Catholic Charities of West Tennessee in supporting underserved populations. This experience increased my awareness of how widespread these challenges are, even within my local community.

Did you work individually or as part of a team, and how did that impact your experience?
I worked as part of a team, which made the experience more efficient and enjoyable. Each volunteer had a role, and we relied on each other to keep the process organized and running smoothly. Teamwork allowed us to serve more people in a shorter amount of time and created a supportive environment. It also showed me how collaboration can make a bigger impact than working alone.

How did your service contribute to the mission or goals of the organization?
My service contributed directly to the organization’s mission of providing food and support to those in need. By helping load and distribute food efficiently, I played a role in ensuring families received necessary resources in a timely manner. The work I did helped maintain an organized and effective distribution process. This allowed the organization to serve the community more effectively and reach more people during the event.

What unexpected challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?
One unexpected challenge was managing the fast pace of the distribution while ensuring safety and accuracy when loading food into cars. At first, it felt overwhelming, but I adapted by communicating more clearly with my team and focusing on staying organized. Overcoming this challenge helped me become more resilient and better at handling high-pressure situations.
