Room in the Inn: Serving with a Smile DINNER

How did this experience challenge your problem-solving abilities?
We served a significantly higher number of plates this time, which made the flow of the event more intense. I had to think quickly and adapt on the spot by organizing the food line more efficiently, restocking supplies quickly, or helping teammates redistribute tasks so no one was overwhelmed. It pushed me to stay calm under pressure and find small ways to improve our system in real-time.

Did this experience change your perspective on your role within the community or environment?
Yes, it made me realize that even though I’m still a student, I can make a real impact in my community right now. I used to think that I had to wait until I had a degree or a formal position to make a difference. But this experience showed me how much value there is in simply showing up, giving your time, and being present for people who need support.

How might these relationships influence your future involvement?
Working with the same group of volunteers over several days allowed us to build stronger connections. We encouraged each other, shared stories, and bonded over the experience. I know that having this shared service background with other students will keep me connected to community work in the future. These relationships are a support system that will likely lead to more service opportunities down the road.

Do you plan to continue volunteering with this organization? Why or why not?
Yes, I definitely plan to volunteer with Room in the Inn again. Every time I serve, I feel more connected to the mission and the people. The organization creates such a respectful and loving atmosphere for its guests, and I want to continue being part of that. Plus, I’ve seen the difference we can make in just a few hours, so I can only imagine what consistent involvement could do.

What unexpected challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge was managing the rush of people and making sure everyone got their meals quickly and fairly. At one point, we started running low on certain items, which made it tricky to maintain consistency across plates. To handle it, we communicated clearly within the team, adjusted portions as needed, and made sure we stayed positive and reassuring for the guests. That teamwork made all the difference.
