It was an amazing experience!
I really enjoyed helping new students move in! I have never done it before, and I will definitely do it again in the fall. Doing this, I gained skills in talking to all different people and being able to ask people all different questions. Being able to talk to all these different people opened my eyes to all the people from all different places coming to Memphis. This service influenced my understanding of social issues by meeting all these people coming from different backgrounds, how they act, how they dress, and what necessities they bring that differ from another person. It is so important to meet new people and see how all of our lives differ from one another. I worked as a team, my sorority sisters, and we worked in different groups to help everyone move in. It impacted my experience by all of us meeting new people together and working as a team, and building stronger connections with each other and new people. My service contributed to the overall goal by making new students feel safe and maybe a little less anxious about moving into a new place. Transitioning from high school to college isn't easy, and if students at the UofM can help in the smallest way by moving them in and speaking to them, it might help them with know familiar faces and feel comfortable. I think the next time I do this, I will do more hours of it and maybe try to talk a little bit more to the parents and new students. I know both sides can be nerve-racking, but the whole point of serving is the contribute to the world and build connections.
I always enjoy my time volunteering during move in week. I volunteered last year and was excited to help out this year. I love getting to meet new students and their families. I enjoyed getting to calm their nerves or answering any questions they might have. I also like getting to volunteer with other UofM students, especially my sorority sisters. It is also fun getting to see the students I helped move-in during the rest of Tiger Welcome and the semester. It is fun being a part of someone's first week of college experience.
It was nice to help the incoming freshman class!
Wonderful experience
