I had an amazing weekend serving at the Memphis Botanic Gardens Trolls and Trowels: Family Play Day. This event spotlighted the ever-famous trolls at the MBG that strive to save humans by helping us rediscover nature and learn to live in harmony with Earth (MBG Trolls Pamphlet). That day, my assigned troll was Rosa Sunfinger, who "spreads her wisdom by showing how plants can make even the most useless items come back to life" (MBG Trolls Pamphlet). During my service, I worked with fellow volunteers to assist over 100 guests in sowing sunflower seeds from recyclable and biodegradable materials.

Through this experience, I first enhanced my teamwork skills as I collaborated with my group to create an assembly line where visitors received information about the troll, prepped and planted their sunflowers, and packaged them for safekeeping. I also improved my communication competence by being the designated person who spoke to children and families about our troll, Rosa. In this way, I had to develop an engaging yet informative schpiel that could be adapted based on the guest's age and interest. Finally, this opportunity allowed me to explore my career and self-development as I witnessed the behind-the-scenes operations of how one of the most successful non-profits in the Mid-South brings in patrons and ensures they have a good time. With my sights set on the public sector, the MBG was the perfect place to volunteer and learn from the best.

This experience changed my perspective on my role within the community as it opened me up to new ways I can serve our environment and lasting existence on earth. As I began speaking with people who are true conservationists, I realized there are people out there doing this work not only because it is significant to them but also because it benefits our collective surroundings. This service helped me realize the importance of sustainable living and the steps I can take to incorporate these environmentally friendly habits into my life. Although I may not be an expert eco-activist, the smallest contributions ultimately make a difference.

Throughout the day, I formed new connections with other UofM volunteers and the Botanic Gardens staff. Everyone I interacted with was generous and accommodating, making the day memorable. They reminded me why I love service so much: You get to meet and surround yourself with such exceptional and driven people. I will continue volunteering with the Memphis Botanic Gardens because I support their mission and vision for a better tomorrow. I hope to be a part of the change the MBG is currently pioneering, one plant at a time. Beyond that, gaining firsthand insight into the non-profit sector was valuable for me as a non-profit management minor. I also enjoyed being in the natural outdoors, getting some much-needed fresh air and vitamin D. Upon reflection, I would not change my approach to this service opportunity as I was pleased with my experience as a volunteer and how I gave back to the MBG. However, I wish I had bundled up a bit more that morning because it was a chilly day!

Skills and Personal Development
What skills did you develop or improve through this service experience?
Through this experience, I developed my communication and organizational skills. As I worked at the natural mandala activity station, I learned to interact with a variety of people, from kids to adults, and explain things clearly and engagingly. I also improved my ability to organize tasks and manage time effectively, ensuring that the activities ran smoothly and on schedule.

Understanding and Awareness
How did your service influence your understanding of social or environmental issues?
This experience deepened my understanding of environmental stewardship. I learned how important it is to educate others on the role we all play in maintaining our environment. Working with nature’s paints and plant seeds highlighted the deep connection between humans and the natural world.

Relationships and Teamwork
Did you work individually or as part of a team, and how did that impact your experience?
I worked as part of a team, which was incredibly impactful. Collaborating with others brought out different strengths and ideas, making the day more dynamic and effective. It was motivating to see how everyone contributed to the success of the event, and it allowed me to build stronger connections with fellow volunteers.

Organizational Impact and Alignment
How did your service contribute to the mission or goals of the organization?
My service contributed directly to the organization’s mission of promoting environmental education and community engagement. By leading activities that involved hands-on learning, I helped spread awareness about sustainability and the importance of nurturing the environment and caring for each other in our shared home.
Reflection and Improvement
What unexpected challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?
One unexpected challenge was dealing with severely cold weather that I was underdressed for, which caused some activities to be less enjoyable than I had planned. To overcome this, we adapted by huddling up at times, moving frequently, and rubbing our hands together to ensure we were still joyful for the families attending. It was a reminder of the need for flexibility and adaptability in organizing events.
