What skills did you develop or improve through this service experience?
Through this experience, I improved my communication and multitasking skills. Serving meals in a fast-paced environment required me to communicate clearly with both the staff and guests while staying organized and efficient. I also learned how to stay composed and supportive while interacting with individuals facing difficult life circumstances, which helped me become more empathetic and mindful.
How did your service influence your understanding of social or environmental issues?
Volunteering at Room in the Inn Memphis gave me a deeper understanding of the daily challenges that unhoused and low-income families face. It reminded me that food insecurity and housing instability affect many people in our own communities—not just in faraway places. This experience pushed me to think more critically about the systems that perpetuate poverty and the importance of community-based solutions.
Did you work individually or as part of a team, and how did that impact your experience?
I worked as part of a team, which made the experience even more rewarding. Collaborating with other volunteers created a sense of unity and purpose. We encouraged each other, shared tasks, and created a welcoming environment for the guests. That teamwork helped make the entire event run smoothly and reminded me that even small acts of service are stronger when done together.
How did your service contribute to the mission or goals of the organization?
Room in the Inn aims to provide support, dignity, and community for those experiencing homelessness. By helping serve a warm meal and engaging with guests respectfully, I contributed to that mission. My presence showed care and solidarity, reinforcing the idea that everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect—something I believe is central to the organization’s goals.
What would you change about your approach to this service opportunity in the future?
I also plan to take more time to sit and talk with guests, so I can better understand their experiences. Building those personal connections would help me serve more meaningfully and allow the guests to feel more seen and heard.
During this service experience, I developed stronger communication and time management skills. Interacting with parents, children, and other volunteers helped me become more confident when talking with others, and managing different tasks throughout the event taught me how to stay organized and efficient. I also gained a deeper understanding of the community we served. I realized that many families rely on nonprofit organizations for basic needs and support, which made me more aware of the importance of these services and the role they play in people’s lives. Working as part of a team made a big difference in my experience. We shared responsibilities, supported one another, and created a positive environment that made everything run more smoothly. Our service contributed directly to the organization’s mission by helping them host a successful event for families while also giving them the chance to focus more on building relationships with the people they serve. One unexpected challenge we faced was managing the crowd during serving time, but we overcame it by improving our communication and clearly dividing tasks. This experience not only helped me grow personally, but it also reminded me of the value of teamwork and the impact small acts of service can have on a community.
I always have a great experience at the Room in the Inn. The skills I improved on was my short conversation skills with the staff, volunteers, and people staying at the room in the inn. Every time I go to the Room in the inn I am reminded of the struggles many families go through. Seeing the families at room in the inn inspires you to continue to help those in need. During my experience I met Ms. Angela (one of the staff members) she was extremely sweet! My service directly aligns with my personal values which is to care for others. I love Room in the Inn and I plan on volunteering here again !
