How did your direct service benefit members of the broader community?
Describe your service.Which population(s) did you serve? What was their reaction to you/your group being there?
At Feast For Friends, I got the opportunity to directly impact the broader community by providing a warm meal and fostering a sense of community for marginalized populations in the Memphis area.
During my volunteering, I helped prepare and serve meals to the clients in a sit-down dinner style. I took care to ensure food safety, prepared plates, and made sure everyone received a meal. I also engaged with clients and provided a friendly face during the event. I served members of the Memphis community who were marginalized and in need of support. Their reaction to our help was highly positive as they appreciated the opportunity to enjoy a free, nutritious, and hot meal in a welcoming environment.

What skills did you develop or improve through your direct service?
Through my volunteer experience, I improved my communication, teamwork, and empathy skills. These skills are invaluable in any personal or professional setting and enhanced my ability to connect with and serve others effectively.

Did your service align with your personal values and beliefs? If not, how did you handle any conflicting feelings?
My service at Feast For Friends aligned with my values and beliefs of compassion and care for the community. Being able to contribute to such a meaningful cause has been incredibly fulfilling for me because I believe in inclusion and equality. Everybody should be able to enjoy themselves and nurture their body and it feels nice to know that I contributed to making that possible.
What did you learn about the community or environment you served?
Through this experience, I gained a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by marginalized populations in the Memphis community. I also learned about the importance of providing not just a physical need such as food, but also about the benefits of providing an emotional need by bringing a sense of belonging and dignity to those in need.
How did your service contribute to the overall mission or goals of the organization or cause you were working with?
My service correlates with the overall mission of Feast For Friends, which is to provide free meals and create a safe and welcoming community for marginalized populations. By ensuring that everyone receives a meal and feels welcomed, I helped fulfill this mission and contributed to the organization's goals.
Did you work individually or as part of a team during your service? How did that impact your experience?
I worked as part of a team during my service, which made my experience even better. Collaborating with other volunteers allowed us to serve more efficiently and effectively, and it was nice sharing the feeling of giving and support with others. My volunteer service has had a profound impact on me because it deepened my understanding of social issues, motivated my contributions to community service, and reminded me of the importance of kindness and compassion in this world.

I plan to continue volunteering because the opportunity to directly impact the lives of those in need and actively contribute to a cause I deeply believe in is incredibly rewarding. The sense of community and connection I feel with my fellow volunteers makes the experience of life so much more fulfilling.

I enjoyed helping out the community and helping our less unfortunate and serving them a meal.
