Virtual Volunteer Day

I loved this experience and the fact that it offered informational and specific ways that I can better my community through various non profits from the comfort of my home. I was only able to select one shift to write an impact about, but I actually ended up attending 3 shifts to hear about what they had to share. The shifts I attended included Spreading Sunshine, Memphis Rox, and Volunteer Odyssey. All 3 had a different project to do for the Memphis community that was easy enough to do from your home. I really enjoyed getting to hear Ari Morris discuss the purpose and benefit of the work that Spreading Sunshine does in Memphis, and it made me very excited to continue sending them handmade birthday cards for the children and families they help through extremely difficult situations. The hour that Memphis Rox was the spotlight also opened my eyes up to so many simple ways I can reduce unnecessary waste and help keep Memphis clean. I am now aware that the local collection agency number is 311 because of the information that Memphis Rox shared, and I can think of so many times in the past that knowledge would have been so helpful. The hour that Volunteer Odyssey hosted was also very informational as far as ways that they need support, but what I loved most about this session was the Volunteer and Tell. It was not only inspiring to hear the ways that other Memphis residents have been making efforts big and small to better the community, but also extremely helpful in educating me of other ways I can better myself and the community that I probably would have never thought of otherwise. Overall the Virtual Volunteer Day was much more beneficial to me than I could have expected, and I feel excited to continue acting out the new ways that I have learned to be an activist of change in the Memphis community while still adhering to CDC guidelines.
