Beaver Watershed Alliance - Stewardship Day

Saturday, October 28th, 2017 from 10:00am to 12:00pm (CT)

About

Help out for a morning to do something meaningful, valued by the community and protect our drinking water supply, Beaver Lake, all while enjoying the outdoors! We need your help, and many hands makes light work!!

BWA’s project, Watershed Stewardship Day, will target M. Sequoyah, located in south Fayetteville. In 2003, Theo Witsell with Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, surveyed the property and noted invasive plant species such as Amur Honeysuckle, Japanese Honeysuckle, Oriental Bittersweet, Tree-of-Heaven, Wintercreeper, Fragrant Honeysuckle, Perilla Mint, and Multiflora Rose. Volunteers will work alongside Beaver Watershed Alliance to remove these plants, which will help native plants and wildlife thrive on the mountain. We will also conduct a cleanup to remove trash from natural areas. Tools, plant i.d. and snacks will be provided.

Mt. Sequoyah lies in the Town Branch watershed, a sub-watershed of the West Fork-White River watershed. The West Fork of the White River (WFWR) flows into Beaver Lake, the regional drinking water source for 1 in 6 Arkansans. The WFWR is an impaired river impacted by sediment and nutrients, and has lost one-third of aquatic species on record since 1894 (Brown et al., 2003).
