    SOAR Afterschool Program

In SOAR today, we started in the classroom with making gingerbread houses out of paper. The kids were kind of confused at first but as walking around and helping them they got more excited. A lot of the kids wanted me to draw a wreath, Christmas tree, and candy cane. While doing their house they got to watch Home Alone and continuing their crafts. I asked the students how there Thanksgiving was and what they did. A lot of them liked to tell me about what their Elf does and how silly they are. We did this activity for the whole time because they had an activity in the gym. After our activity we went to dinner and the kids got to eat with their group.

In SOAR today, we started off in the classroom, and the students made more turkey projects. They decorated different thanksgiving activities. I went around the room and a lot of them like for me to help them spell different words. After our activity we went to the gym and played games and had afternoon show! The kids love to do there chants and see which student got picked for the week. After the game and show the kids had craft time, they got to paint their self-portrait they did the week before. The kids loved the paint and want to paint everything. After painting they did dinner, so they all got their food and sat with their class.

In SOAR today we worked on another Turkey assignment. They got to decorate a turkey print out, colored it in and then they cut it out. On the back of the turkey feathers they all wrote their name. It was super fun and go around and have all the students want to show me their fun, colorful turkey. While walking around there was a student who had a butterfly from recess and wanted to show me and talk everything about how awesome butterflies are. After they all made their turkeys, we went to the gym and had a fire drill. We all went outside and lined up in our groups and waited for directions. After the drill we went back to our classroom and finished all of our turkeys. The students were so excited about them, so we wanted to make sure they had plenty of time to decorate them however they wanted. After that it was dinner time, so we all lined up and headed to the cafeteria.

In SOAR today, we did super fun crafts for Thanksgiving. We started off in the art room, and they made turkey hats. The whole lesson was on being thankful, so we talked about what that means and how little things we should show thanks. They got a turkey worksheet and got to put three things they are thankful for and then they got to color it in. I went around and helped the students write what they are thankful for. Most of them said food, family and toys but it was really sweet to hear all their answers and their drawings. Once they colored and wrote in the worksheet, they cut their turkeys and picked out a color for their hat. We glued the turkeys on the hats and made them for each student. They loved this activity because they got to walk around with their special hat on, they made. Then once they made them craft we switched to clubs. So, the kids got to create self-portraits, then they made there's and will paint them next week. After they finished their portraits, they had dinner and got to eat with their peers.

Today at SOAR we started off in the gym area when I got to the school. Since it was the Wednesday before Halloween, we wanted to get the kids in spirit especially since the Kappa Carnival was that night. The leaders decided to play different Halloween games. We started off with Freeze dance, so each kid got to dance to music and freeze like a Halloween character. When doing freeze dance, I helped a child who was upset and we talked it out and it was great to see them happy and excited to play again with their friends. Then we played red light, green light. The kids loved these games because they got to run across the gym floor. They played a couple rounds of this game just because they were having so much fun. Next, they went to clubs, so each kid separated into their club for the day. I went with the scripts club again and the kids watched a movie while writing the scripts.

Today's class was super fun because I got to experience "sorting house." Which is where all of the SOAR students get placed into like Harry Potter houses that each have a chant, symbol, and animal. The students all got into the gym, and most were already in their house group. The students who were not in a house yet got to set in the middle of the gym. Then they get a balloon popped over their head that reveals their house color. It was really sweet how after each house reveal how the students all went and hugged their peers. After the reveal each house got to go around and say their chant. After that all the students got to go into their stations. I was in the script writing station. A group of students and I went to a classroom, and they got to watch a movie while writing their own movie script. It was a great class that I got to experience.

In SOAR today they had parent teacher conferences, so the students got to spend the day playing outside. The students could either go in the gym and watch a movie or go play outside. Most of them wanted to go have free play outside. I got to play with the kids, and we went on the jungle gym and played soccer. One student got a butterfly and showed me which was really sweet. Then as we were switching to go check on the students inside, I helped solved a conflict between students. The kids were having a disagreement on one of them throwing the ball. I sat down with them, and we talked about how that is not showing kindness and we have to respect our peers.

In the hour I volunteered at George for SOAR we learned about kindness. We started off in the classrooms and the leaders taught about being kind. The students got to answer questions about what kindness is and how to show kindness. After the discussion the students got to do a worksheet that talked about kindness. On the worksheet it had a color in the letters, and a spot to fill in what they experienced with kindness. After completing the worksheet, the whole class got to go in the gym and play dodgeball for a fun activity.
