This shift was busy from the get go. When we entered the trauma unit, we were told that there was a patient with very deep lacerations that might take a few hours to suture. It took use 4 hours to completely suture that patient, which gave me the chance to continue honing my skills in suturing. This experience also demonstrated the team work needed to run a trauma units. The residents that night, understanding that we would be busy for a few hours with our first patient, took care of the other patients that came in with lacerations. Fortunately, there weren't many patients who came in needing wound care, and the ones who did come in only had very minor lacerations. The nurses also would check in periodically during this time to make sure we were alright and had everything we needed. All in all, it was a great night with a lot of experience gained.
My experience doing suture tech was very rewarding. There was not a single dull moment where I wasn't either suturing or shadowing. I got to see things that I otherwise would not have seen elsewhere.
