    MAS Field Trips

Volunteering at Memphis Animal Services Field Trips as a senior in college allowed me to benefit the broader community by providing shelter dogs with enriching foster field trips. My role involved matching with a dog, collecting photos, videos, and information to share, and ultimately aiding in finding them permanent homes. As a people-facing volunteer, I served the local community and witnessed positive reactions from people appreciating the opportunity to connect with and provide a break for shelter dogs. The experience improved my communication, teamwork, and empathy skills, as I effectively conveyed the animals' personalities and needs. Personally, the impact was profound, bringing a sense of fulfillment and purpose to my volunteer work, and deepening my understanding of animal welfare and community involvement. I plan to continue volunteering with this organization as it aligns with my passion for animal welfare and contributes to making a difference in the lives of shelter dogs, increasing their chances of finding loving homes.

    Soulsville Community Closet

At Memphis Rox's Soulsville Community Closet, I provided affordable clothing and other
essentials to the underprivileged Memphis community. During this event, I helped customers
find the items they needed and did other customer service tasks such as bagging and loading
items for customers. I served the diverse population of Memphis that may be struggling
financially or are just looking for more affordable options for household items. The reactions
received from the community I served were overall appreciative and grateful and I had a great
experience with all parties involved in the event. This volunteer opportunity required skills such
as empathy, effective communication, and active listening. Interacting with the population served
illustrated our community's challenges and how those who have resources to distribute should
look for more innovative and effective ways to contribute. My service aligned with Memphis
Rox+Community as its mission includes providing affordable staples to those who need them
    most.

    Clothing Closet Volunteer

I contributed to the Memphis community by helping with the distribution of clothing to those in need. Additionally, I helped prepare sack meals and distribute the meals, masks, and hygiene kits to all who asked for them. During the event, I directly served the impoverished in the Memphis community. Catholic Charities of West Tennessee and the people receiving the clothing were all kind and welcoming. The Primary Administrator, Mandy, was the main point of contact for the service opportunity. Mandy made the sign-up process easy and made the directions for the event clear and concise. I enjoyed my time serving for this organization and plan on volunteering here again.

This service benefited the impoverished and underprivileged by putting together and handing out meals. During this event, I served those struggling financially and personally in the Memphis community. Additionally, I helped put break down boxes, clean the area afterward, and direct people to whom to speak about obtaining the necessary information to apply for subsidized housing. The volunteers and those being served were incredibly kind and I felt like I was included during the event.
I learned that people in our community struggle for all kinds of reasons and that receiving help is often stigmatized. I also learned that others in the community are extremely generous with their time and resources. Catholic Charities of West Tennessee values hospitality and service, and through this event, I embodied these values when serving our community. I have the chance to work with a great team. I felt welcomed, and that the time and service I contributed was valued.

    MAS Field Trips

I contributed to the Memphis community through the advertisement that there are available and lovable pets that are up for adoption. During this event, I took Melinda, a dog, around the Memphis community and let people know she was available for adoption. We fed her treats and took pictures of her to upload to the MAS website. I served the pets in the Memphis community by giving them a break to get out and experience what adoption would feel like. Additionally, I served the people of Memphis by showing that Melinda is a great dog to adopt. The Memphis Animal Services team was incredibly helpful and enthusiastic about the entire event. I personally have a dog that came from a shelter and feel that the shelter does a great job at getting animals adopted. I learned that Memphis Animal Services regularly does these creative events and enjoys giving volunteers the freedom to come up with ideas for the pets. I also learned that people are very open to pet adoption once they have an opportunity to get to know the pet personally. The overall goal of this organization is to have the pets healthy and adopted by caring families. This goal aligns with the work I did as a volunteer because I advertised Melinda for adoption.
