Myself and many others cheered on runners as they pushed through the 5k. I made signs to hold up with words of encouragement and enjoyed getting to see all the people dressed in their halloween attire supporting LeBonheur. I stayed after to help clean up and got to touch base with many of those who put the event on. It was a blast getting to serve with other University of Memphis students. I got to see a portion of our city come together and raise money for a hospital those does so much for all who come in the doors!
During this event we served the Girl Scouts with a set up of what seemed like escape rooms. There were three rooms that each built upon the other, had a storyline, and prompted the girls to work together and problem solve. My room was about toxic waste spilling and nearly destroying a town, but if the players could work together and get the waste, a bucket, out of the "danger zone" using only two ropes then they would save everyone. It was really neat to watch each group interact with new people and come up with a different way each time to do it. It was easy to create an atmosphere that was welcoming, comfortable, and fun for each girl to grow and think in.
Here myself and a large group of others made an assembly line down a large group of tables filled with food. We packaged emergency meal bags for the homeless or those in need to have in case MIFA could not deliver meals to them one day. We got to meet many of the amazing employees and truly see the passion they have for serving the community of Memphis. It was fun and rewarding to be apart of something you know will impact and help those in need.
At Kipp they put us to work helping categorize, label, and organize what was going to be their new library. I had never realized all that went into making a fully functioning library that students and teachers could use and have as a resource for classes. I was apart of the lettering and labeling crew. We would put the corresponding color and letter to each individual books' designated reading level. It was a blast and the time flew by because we were continually working.
