I loved this event for service on Saturday because I had never been down to Mud Island, so going down there to serve was a great way to familiarize myself with the area. The work was clean-up on some of the hiking/biking trails down there and I liked being able to beautify the area.
The alternative break experience was a trip that I am so glad I got to participate in. Staying in Memphis was even better for me because I'm not from here, so I always like to give back to the community when I can since I've moved here. One of my favorite tasks I did on my trip was helping at an elementary school and interacting with fourth grade students for two days of the experience. Overall, I was able to build connections with the other students on my trip and impact my local community by doing various service projects over the course of a week.
I served at MLK Day of Service with my Orientation Guide team as a part of our team retreat that we had. It was a good experience being able to clean up trash on Lamar Ave with them because I wanted to show them that service can be simple. It was also a good experience because I want the Orientation Guide team to embody the values of the University and I believe we were able to do that through this service experience.
I always enjoy doing the community clean up with Memphis Rox. The Soulsville area is home to many and it’s rewarding to be able to help their community by picking up trash along the main roads.
This event was held by an organization at the University of Memphis. PAUSE put on this event to show appreciation to healthcare workers by writing them thank you cards and delivering them during the holiday season. I enjoyed this event because I was able to spread appreciation to a group of workers that has done a lot for the community the past few years. The intended audience will be the healthcare workers at Baptist Hospital. This whole experience was nice because it was something small that will make a big impact on someone's day.
This was the first community service event I had done since COVID started and it was nice to get back out into the community to pick up trash with other University of Memphis students. Many residents of the community stopped to thank us for our work and asked us about our service while we were there.
