Brianna @ DRS Notetaker for the University of Memphis

As a notetaker for DRS, I am able to provide notes for students who may need extra support. Taking notes helps me stay focused and as a notetaker, I have to stay on top of doing my work so that the students that need help from me are able to get their notes. I love that I am able to provide for some students in any way possible for them.

    September 2020 Service on Saturday

Although we had to volunteer in ways that are different than what we are used to, I had a blast being able to lead this event, as well as donating items to some organizations. When I was able to drop off the items to all of each organization, they were delighted to know that the UofM was thinking of them during these uncertain times.

    Brianna @ New Orleans Mission

Back at the Mission, we were able to get a tour of the facility and we were able to hear some stories from former members who are now on the staff. We learned about the different programs each person can go through and how they help and encourage them to move forward towards their goals. Lastly, we packed lunches and headed out to hand them out to the homeless. This experience was very eye opening and exposed me to a level of vulnerability I hadn't been around.

    Second Harvest Food Bank

At Second Harvest Food Bank we learned about all the efforts and support they raise for those who are in need of food supplies. We bagged and packaged several pounds of Gumbo and Jambalaya to be put into care packages for families and schools. Going through the whole process from unboxing to putting the labels on the bags really opened my eyes to all the work that goes on behind the scenes of the food kitchen

New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity

At Habitat for Humanity we were able to help build a house for a formerly incarcerated father of two. His story outlined how hard it had been for him to find stable housing since his release and how fortunate and grateful he was to be able to lean on someone like Habitat. We started by nailing onto the outside of the house and making sure the structure was supported. Next we helped organize materials in the trailer. We also helped build and bring up two walls in the house. I was inspired by how the owner was there helping us every step of the way and how much dedication everyone was putting forth.

    SOUL

    Brianna gave to SOUL

During our time with SOUL, we learned how important it was for trees to be in our environment, especially in Louisiana. We learned that some of the trees we planted were able to soak up 1 million gallons of storm water a day. We helped load the trees onto the truck to take to the houses we were planting at. Upon arriving to the sites, we were given a quick demonstration and left to begin planting our trees. In total we planted more than 8 trees that day and helped in sustaining the urban landscape in New Orleans

    Brianna @ New Orleans Mission

My experience at New Orleans Mission was phenomenal. When we arrived we were greeted and welcomed into their community. We watched as they attended a church service and welcomed anyone and everyone in. We helped prepare the tables for dinner, served the food to the group, and helped clean up once dinner was finished.
