The Day of Merrymaking Festival at Overton Park was a great experience. I volunteered alongside Overton Park Conservacy in various areas. I assisted with setting up tables, setting up bike racks, hauling materials, and wherever else I was needed. It was just great to be a part of the team and help out wherever I could. I felt that I played a part in the festival becoming the beautiful and fun event that it was.
I attended the ‘Healthy You’ workshop, which is a pet of the Self-Awareness & Personal Behavior workshop in the No Stress Success Workshop Series. This event was the first of four scheduled workshops to be hosted by Student Health and Counseling Services at The University of Memphis. In this workshop, we discussed what a healthy body, healthy mind, and healthy spirit meant and looked like individually to us attendees. We also discussed methods and techniques that are supported by research and proven to help in those areas. We were provided services that are offered here at The University of Memphis, such as the Counseling Center, the Relaxation Zone, and so forth.
I had never been to Youth Villages before, but I had heard about them and met employees from there at Career Fairs, and so on. It was a powerful impact to see the youth that are there and hear about the activities that they do on a daily basis and what it takes to keep them on a good path. These individuals of all ages and of different backgrounds have been through a lot. I was able to speak to some of them and interact with them through recreational activities. I think it was a really good experience for them to talk and engage with young college students so that they may be inspired to proceed in that direction.
