Skills and Personal Development
Creating items for families in need taught me how to collaborate better and how to be more effective in my work. I had to think about how to make each blanket durable, warm, and personalized while considering the time and materials, which helped me improve my problem-solving skills. I want a job to help people directly with support work and this experience showed me how important and meaningful community work is.
Understanding and Awareness
Making blankets for families in transitional housing helped me better understand the challenges people face with homelessness, especially with the large families. I discovered how families trying to rebuild their lives needing warmth, comfort, and stabilizing food, transportation, and clothing, and how important those items are. I realized how much small acts of service can change the lives of struggling people in the community and help make them feel visible.
Relationships & Teamwork
I met other volunteers who cared as much about families and contributing as I did at that very event. We collaborated by splitting different tasks, sharing materials and encouraging each other to make our blanket making more efficient and fun. These connections are what keep me coming back, and so they will probably impact on my future participation as well, because there's nothing quite like being part of a group of volunteers that get along from day dot to inspire you to want to stick around even more.
Organizational Impact and Alignment
My work played a key role in supporting the organization’s mission by providing families with handmade blankets and care kits that bring comfort and fulfill essential needs. The organizers were incredibly helpful, offering clear guidance, supplying the necessary materials, and detailing how the blankets would be distributed to the shelter. I’m eager to keep volunteering with this organization because I witnessed firsthand how our efforts truly make a positive impact on families going through tough times.
Reflection and Improvement
I think that there isn't room for improvement and that the organization did amazing with explaining what the cause was for and telling us the stories of families and how they help. Along with explaining why our impact is important we had the chance to eat from food provided by them. Overall these people are amazing and will 100% come back to help again.
I love this experience very much, thank you for having it. It feels good to do things for people out the kindness of my heart
