The weed wrangle significantly improved my applied plant identifications skills, specifically recognizing common invasive species like privet or English ivy. I enhanced my efficiency in manual labor, as removing tenacious weeds often requires proper technique and sustained effort. I also practiced effective communication when coordinating with other volunteers on clearing a specific area or sharing the best method for removing a root system. I learned that the Memphis Botanic Garden faces a constant and significant challenge from aggressive invasive plans that threaten the native biodiversity of the urban ecosystem. I saw the dedication of the Memphis volunteer community, realizing that people from diverse backgrounds are willing to spend their weekend doing hard, dirty work because they value preserving natural space. I worked primarily as a team, which made the job much more efficient and boosted my motivation and morale. Sharing the physical exertion created a sense of shared accomplishment and teamwork among the volunteers. My service directly contributed to the Botanic Garden’s mission of environmental stewardship and preservation of biodiversity. By removing invasive species, our team helped restore native habitat and cleared out harmful plants, ensuring the long-term health of that specific area. In the future, approaching this experience I would better prepare for the physical work.
