MLK Days of Service: Shelby Farms Park Helping Hands

Volunteering for trash pick-up allowed me to develop several important skills, particularly in teamwork, problem-solving, and communication. Working alongside others to clean up public spaces helped me understand the importance of collaboration, as we had to coordinate efforts to cover large areas efficiently. This experience deepened my understanding of environmental issues, especially the impact that littering has on local ecosystems and communities. I became more aware of how small actions, like disposing of trash properly, can have significant long-term effects on the environment. Throughout the service, I formed new connections with fellow volunteers, which made the work more enjoyable and motivating. My efforts directly contributed to the organization's goal of promoting a cleaner, healthier community, and I felt a sense of pride in helping to achieve that. One unexpected challenge was dealing with the unpredictability of weather, which sometimes made it difficult to work. However, we overcame this by being flexible with our schedules and ensuring we had appropriate gear for various conditions. Overall, this volunteering experience reinforced my commitment to environmental stewardship and emphasized the importance of community engagement in addressing social issues.

The views were amazing. The buffalo are a good size herd. It was cold but experience was definitely worth it!
