Skills and Personal Development:
After attending the Career and Internship Fair held by the Fogelman College of Business and Economics this past week, the experience really encouraged me to look further into what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go in the future. This morning, I evaluated the Pathway U assessments and the results reflected much of my character and passions, however, the major I declared does not align with as many values as the recommended subject area did. I say all of this because what I did today at the Athlete Fun Day is more of what I would like to do in the future. I would like to organize events like this, promote them, and network with others to serve their local community. This direction is very different from the one I chose originally, but I want pursue something I am passionate about rather than passively work from paycheck to paycheck.
Understanding and Awareness:
If I could describe the event, the community, and the environment in one word it would be "Celebrate." Celebration was everywhere and it was so uplifting to see others being recognized. There is a genuine joy that appears over a person's face when they realize others are congratulating them for something they had done. Celebration could not happen without the support of others. Being part of a community that expresses their support is one that draws attraction and appeal to those on the outside to also join in fellowship and service. One last note for this section: living in the moment. That is a little cliche, but it is so important for events like this. When others see your engagement, your attentiveness, and your enjoyment, then it not only benefits you to make connections, but also benefits the other person to know they are seen and heard.
Relationships and Teamwork:
We worked as a team; two volunteers or angels as they called us were partnered with an athlete. LaDerick (apologies if I spelled his name wrong) and I met an athlete named Elijah Johnson. We guided him to the stations he signed up to participate in, celebrated with him when he received his placement ribbons, and bonded through small conversations. His mom was there to cheer and support throughout the event. I hope to see Elijah and LaDerick again someday. In addition, the site leaders from University of Memphis were so welcoming, involved, and friendly.
Organizational Impact and Alignment:
The primary goal for St.Ann's was to contribute a day for people with disabilities to enjoy a day out with activity, music, and prizes. Every event- small or large- cannot be done with a singular person. The need for volunteers was met and that allowed the activities to flow smoothly. The staff from St.Ann's were very informative and bright. I would definitely volunteer for this organization again.
Reflection and Improvement:
The biggest challenge I faced was communication; I didn't always have the words to say, and I was at a loss with striking up conversations with others. However, I am going to seek out more events like this to learn more about how I can approach and communicate with others better.
