About

With 7.5 acres of greenspace atop Mabry's Hill and a single staff member, volunteers provide vital in maintaining and beautifying our historic site. Mabry-Hazen House sits at the center of a level 1 arboretum, and green thumbs are necessary to take care of the diverse flora.

These are 3 hour long shifts to help the museum take on the various projects needed to maintain the grounds and gardens.

There are two primary opportunities to volunteer with our grounds:

  • Groundskeeping - Tasks like bed care, grounds maintenance, bush pruning and weeding are typical. This year we aim to expand the accessibility of natural resources because we have been included on the Dogwood Arts’s Trail. The major project of reclaiming the dogwood grove on the east end of the property will require the help of our groundskeeping volunteers, and will involve brush removal among other tasks. We also have numerous flower beds around the site and
  • Gardening - During the Spring and Summer month, Mabry-Hazen House cultivates a number of flower bed including natives, perennials, and annuals. Volunteers will help care for the beds by weeding, watering, and mulching them.
