🚗🌞 Summer Heat Survey: Drive-Through Data Collection

Join a community-powered scientific effort to help map heat vulnerabilities across Memphis, Germantown, and Collierville! We need volunteers to drive pre-set routes—or guide the drivers—as they collect outdoor temperature and humidity data during a summer heat wave. This data will be used to create real local heat index maps and identify areas in need of cooling interventions.

Tentative Campaign Date: Saturday, July 19, 2025 (confirmation about July 12)
If July 19 doesn’t work, the rain dates are July 26 or August 2.

Time Blocks (choose all you’re available for):
Morning Traverse: 6:00–7:00 AM
Afternoon Traverse: 3:00–4:00 PM
Evening Traverse: 7:00–8:00 PM

To participate in the campaign, volunteers must attend a mandatory one-hour training session, complete a short quiz, and sign a waiver. Volunteers are encouraged to commit to all three traverses, but we also welcome those who can only join for one or two. The total time commitment ranges from 2 to 6 hours, depending on availability.

Volunteer Roles:
Choose one or both
– Driver (must have valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and access to a vehicle)
– Navigator (ride along and help with route guidance—no car needed)

Perks:
All volunteers who complete training and all three traverses receive a gift card as a thank you.

Training Info: We will hold an in-person training session on Tuesday, July 8, at 6:00 p.m. at Johnson Hall. Please note that this training is mandatory for participation in the project. Address: 488 Patterson St, Memphis, TN 38111 Room 110 (auditorium) at Johnson Hall, University of Memphis You can park in the metered spaces in front of Johnson Hall—after 5 p.m., there should be plenty of spots available, and we will cover the parking fee for you. The training will last about 40 to 50 minutes. For those who cannot attend in person, we will also offer a virtual meeting option (link to be provided). The session will be recorded for anyone who cannot join at that time, although we strongly encourage you to join live if possible so you can see the equipment first-hand and ask any questions.
