Running a donation drive for MAS, collecting donations on campus and then bringing them to MAS. This service will impact the animals and staff of MAS and they were very excited to see the donations brought in. Through this I developed more personal skills as I ran this drive myself and therefore had to make preparations for it through communication with MAS and with my audience. I learned how with effective communication you can create something that can greatly help others! This follows my personal beliefs especially because I love animals. My family took in three stray cats that were left alone in the winter by our neighbors, and ever since then we've always gone to the shelters to show love to the animals. Lastly, I was able to work mostly individually through this experience, which is something I have not done before! The difference of having a team is that you have more ways to communicate, but I think with what I had I did a good job and was able to collect donations on campus, leading to having a successful first toy drive.
This service was cleaning up the V&E Greenline, particularly by cutting out roots and weeds that are damaging plants. We served the V&E Greenline and we received positive feedback even while we were serving, the plants need to be up-kept and the path is so large, they must rely on volunteers like us to keep it beautiful. This service supports the values of the UofM because it is keeping up interactions with the community and doing something larger than ourselves, driven by doing! I would love to continue volunteering for this program if I continue to stay at Memphis because it is a place I've volunteered for 3 years now, and it is always such a fun experience especially when your friends come and volunteer with you! This service aligns with my personal values because I enjoy helping out around places in the community that are in need. Coming together with not only other students at the UofM but also members of the Memphis community and getting to know why they volunteer is so rewarding.
This service was moving in students and helping their families unload though carts and manpower. Through this impact, I was able to serve new students to the University of Memphis as they were moving in to campus dorms. A skill that I developed through this opportunity was being able to communicate with new groups on campus. It can be difficult for me sometimes to reach out to others younger than me, so this opportunity made me feel more comfortable during WOW. This service adds to the overall goals of the UofM because it is creating a community on campus between students. It is important to build these relationships to make students feel more comfortable with being on campus. Last, this service aligns with my personal values because I value making those connections and being a helping hand to others. You may have no idea what someone is going through, especially beginning the new journey of college. I enjoyed being able to help them smile on such a stressful day.
Staying for one extra hour to help set up for the event Look Back to Live Ahead, a civil wrongs exhibit covering the events of the Memphis Massacre.
Very organized and a great group of people!
Making goody bags for Le Bonheur Children's Hospital with Phi Mu.
So much fun! We got to take a dog for a field trip. He was so loveable and we brought him around campus and let him meet some of our friends.
