    Honors College Path Program 2023-2024
    Honors College Path Program 2023-2024

I went to the bottom of the spiral staircase where they had a few people handing out snacks for everyone that was studying for the finals. The event was called “Finals Study Break - Honors college” and I met someone named Tyler Merrine who gave me a Reese’s cup. He was sitting there handing them out. I also saw my cousin and I got another honors college sticker. It was a nice small break from studying for biochemistry all day.

I worked again with the owner of CCEL. His name is Mr. Tanguma and he is an extremely kind person. He also makes a lot of jokes when he isn't working on his projects. This time I helped out with the little farm he has going on at a residence he's trying to find a buyer for. He also has a place where he keeps chickens, so I learned how to collect some eggs there. He even let me take some home and now my mom has them labeled. Going to try them out soon! I mainly just watered the plants and took some weeds out. This has been one of the best experiences I've had volunteering, and I'll likely go back to just help out without asking for volunteering hours.

I helped out the owner of the CCEL company here in Springdale. I did all sorts of things, we worked on one of his projects to start, then he treated everyone to pizza. He's a small business owner, but he has tons of projects. Many have to do with building things for people, or renovations. He taught me a lot of useful skills and showed me how to work with tools I didn't know how to before. If needed his phone number is 479-957-8836 to check if I went and helped. You may not be able to find the company online.

There was an Honors College Mic event called “Practical Psychedelics” It was over the history and uses of certain Psychedelics and was a talk by John J. Spollen, M.D. He talked about different drugs and he tried his best to describe something he hasn’t experienced using google images he searched up with the name of the drug. He also showed plenty of tests conducted by several schools over different treatments using the psychedelics he talked about. Unfortunately, I really didn’t understand most of the data, but it was a great talk. There was a group of people being rude behind me that wouldn’t stop talking as the doctor was speaking, but they got really quiet when the noticed everyone staring at them. It was kind of odd too because there was another psychiatrist there who asked a question about doing a test with placebo and she claimed there was no way to do placebo tests because even she could tell the difference between how people were acting in different groups when she wasn’t allowed to know. All I could think about while she said that was why not just be assigned to only one group and have no contact with the other group. Even if you know how patients should be acting everyone is different physiologically, so some similarities may just be coincidence. It’s a silly idea I bet that has been used before and probably doesn’t work for a few different reasons like differences in the perceptions of behavior.

I went to the food pantry on sycamore again and met Mrs. Allison today. She was really nice and helped keep me busy the entire time and even gave me donuts after volunteering, which was so kind. I also got garlic bread and just made a really good torta like the ones at taquerias. Today I volunteered for 5 hours and it was a little bit of a slower pace, but I got to bag flour and sugar which was fun, then I helped make 5 pound bags of chicken fritters for next week. I was trying my best to ask around to see if anyone needed help with anything and it made 5 hours seem like 2. The environment was nice and I saw some faces I saw last week and some new ones this week. I was also informed that it happens over the summer so I may be volunteering again over the summer when I have the time to!

It was honestly a relaxing experience. Today wasn't a busy day for the store, which was great for me because I hadn't eaten anything for breakfast before going because I always forget to do so. Either way I helped clear racks of empty hangars, and organizing clothes by a color code dictated by the store. The rows of clothes were very pretty and they have so many things there it was insane to see all of it. There is so much that you can take your youngest nephew to your oldest nana. An absolutely fundamental location everyone should know about.

I attended the Networking and LinkedIn event in room 126. I learned that although it won't be as useful as it may be for others who are preparing to enter the workforce after their undergraduate degree, I should still create a professional profile to use for getting connected with other people who have similar goals as me so that I might learn from them and how they got to where they are based on their experiences.
