An amazing chance to spend some time outdoors cleaning up the natural area around Beaver Lake together and learn about water management and restoration. Every team and staff was full of energy and it was a great atmosphere to work in. The landscape science fair afterwards was incredible; every booth had awesome experts excited to share their knowledge and resources for taking care of the environment. Can't wait to sign up for more!
I walked around campus with a group of volunteers to locate and record where birds have run into windows on campus, which they can then put anti-reflective material on to decrease the number of bird deaths from window strikes. I got to have great conversations with the group leading graduated PhD student about the current results of her research as she guided me through performing the survey. I enjoyed helping collect and record data and learning about why different spots were more common for window strikes, like sky bridges. It provided an unexpected insight into architectural window design and glazing strategy with regard to birds, which I now can use in my studio projects as an architecture student.

I donated 15 cans of soups to the New Beginnings Food Library. It was a great way to support the community thanks to the clear and easy food library system they have in place.
I wrote 15 cards for hospital patients during the hour-long event. I learned about the ways and opportunities to volunteer through the VAC as well as service awards you can receive for your dedication. I also signed up for the GY10 groupme to stay connected throughout the semester and volunteer with friends together to serve the community. Overall, it was a great way to get involved with the serving group on campus while writing encouraging cards for patients to lift their spirits during difficult times.
I collected food waste and trash from customers eating in the union to sort it into compost material rather than going to a landfill. I found it really rewarding to directly engage with students by having brief conversations about sustainability practices while taking their trash. Most of them didn't usually compost, because they simply weren't aware they had the option/ability to in the university. I feel like we raised a lot of awareness about individual composting contribution, and that every person we interacted with would happily contribute to composting again the next time they ate in the union.
