On Friday I went back to Jackson Elementary School to give out bags of food to the students. Once again I enjoyed myself and enjoyed seeing the smiles on the student faces. This time some of the kids gave me hugs while smiling and saying thank you. It's a sad thing to see, but made me feel good to give their family one less thing to worry about. The bags had some of the same items with a little extra different things. What ever bags were left over, we took to the office.
After class my friend invited to come do some community service with her and her church. We went to Jackson Elementary School to give out bags of food to all the students. In those bags were some water, granola bars, oatmeal, a bag of rice, and a can of fruit. During that time of giving out the bags, children were smiling giving hugs and high fives. There were some children who did ask for a second bag and was given to them after every kid got their first bag. While giving out the bags I had one student ask me where we been and that he didn't get a bag last week. I felt a little heart broken, because the kids depend and look forward to getting these bags every week. I'm not from Memphis and was told that the kids who go to school here live in a poor community and sometimes their families don't have enough money for things. This experience honestly had a positive impact on me and had me thinking about those kids and their families the whole ride home. Because of this great experience I decided to make this a weekly thing, just to see smiles on their faces. Growing up shelter I never got the chance to see people like this who struggle.
