The weather last Thursday was wonderful and we took the girls to the green line for full advantage of the fall day. As usual, we changed and warmed up before breaking off into small groups, pairing girls with coaches. We walked to the green line and spent about 30 minutes on it. On the green line, my group ran for 30 seconds and walked for a minute, a successful strategy that we will try with all the girls soon.

This week at run club, we followed the usual agenda getting them changed, to the gym, and warmed up. Then we took them outside to the field and ran a couple of laps before playing a game. This game was a version of red light green light (run on green, stop on red) but we added in different exercises for the green light (squats, lunges, etc.) to switch things up.
This was our first day of run club for the semester. We introduced the girls to ourselves, to each other, and to the rules of run club. We followed the ABCD of rules that they do in gym: Act Safely, Be Prepared and Positive, Cooperate, and Do Your Best. We went over the schedule of what every Thursday would look like and took them outside to play a game called Streets and Avenues.
I listened to a brief orientation about Memphis Tilth and the St. Paul Garden before heading out to the garden where I watered, weeded, and planted. I was supervised the whole time and was able to see a demo of what to do and ask questions when necessary. Overall, I had so much fun doing something new while still feeling like I was making a needed impact.
Yesterday I served with More Than a Meal at Idlewild Presbyterian Church. This is a service where anyone who wants a meal can come in, attend a worship service if they wish, and have dinner. The dining room is set up with tables and each person sits down and is served by the volunteers. Once we serve them the plated food, we have the opportunity to sit down and talk with them. The way that dinner is set up makes it much more engaging than a traditional soup kitchen. I had a really great time talking to two of the men at my table and felt that we really bonded over dinner.
Last Tuesday at run club the weather was warm enough to have club outside. We had an especially small group and each coach paired up with two girls for the duration of our workout. We warmed up and then alternated walking and running for thirty minutes. Once that was complete, we cooled down, had snack, and did homework. We will be completing a 5k with the girls in May and having the girls active for thirty straight minutes was a great practice for that.
This week at run club, we have an especially small group with only 6 girls. As usual, we had our warm up where one of the older girls led us in stretches. It was sprinkling a very small amount, but we were still able to run outside, something the girls appreciate. I stuck with one of the girls during her laps and we did a combination of walking, skipping, jogging, and running. Afterwards, we cooled down and had each girl give a stretch that they wanted to do. We had some extra time and were able to play basketball and eat snack before club ended.
Yesterday at run club, we welcomed the girls back from spring break and had a smaller group than usual. We held club outside even though it was chilly because the girls wanted to be outside. We warmed up and were pleasantly surprised to see the only fifth grader that was there stepping up and wanted to help lead stretches. Once we felt stretched, we went outside for our walk/run. Each girl completed three laps on the outside track before heading inside to cool down and work on homework.
Last Friday, I delivered 15 meals to seniors with my fellow Volunteer Odyssey employees through MIFA. We were given a brief introduction to the organization and what we were to be doing and then we set off. We drove all around Memphis giving meals to the designated seniors, all who were greatly appreciative. Some were even at the door waiting for us to arrive. This was a wonderful experience and my first time to have worked with MIFA. I was glad to have learned more about the organization and that I was able to take part in their services.
This week at run club, we had our monthly fun run. Since the weather was nice, we were able to do it outside on the track. We began club by having the girls write down their goals, before stretching and running the three laps that make a mile. Afterwards, we cooled down and assessed whether the girls met their goals. I had to leave early to make it to a Read Across America event.
