This was my third time helping out with homework and once again it was such a positive experience. Although our semester at the University of Memphis is coming to and end, I am definitely going to continue to help out at Carpenter Art Garden until their school year is over.
I had another positive experience at Carpenter Art Garden! I was able to help several littles with their homework and had great conversation with two 12 year old twins that attend Collegiate academy. I can’t wait to go back this afternoon and help out!!
I volunteered at the Inclusion Celebration in the UC. I hosted at a table where we encouraged visitors to consider their privileges in life and how they help them get ahead. These include many different things like higher level education, having personal transportation, knowing how to read, etc. The other booths at the event had similar activities like considering your identities and writing inclusion statements. All of the booths had paper and craft supplies available so everyone could write their ides and tape them to a huge mural of inclusion. It was a really positive, eye-opening experience to learn how my peers identify themselves and how different all of our privileges are. I really enjoyed the experience and I hope to volunteer at many more diversity-centered events on campus in the future! It was such a positive and fulfilling way to spend the afternoon, I feel very grateful to have a campus that celebrates diversity each day.
Carpenter Arts Garden was amazing!! The children I helped were all very sweet and it felt great to help them learn and get their homework done and we had so much fun playing afterwards. They have a multitude of craft areas, a playground, a jungle gym, snacks for the kids, and more. It really is like a little after-school utopia for the kids at Lester. I definitely plan to volunteer there on a regular basis now!!
