| Description | Memphis Botanic Gardens is looking for volunteers to put their creative minds to work by creating Newspaper Pots and Accordion Butterflies. See below for instructions. The CEB team will have a donation area set up outside in front of the University Center near the bronze Tiger statue. We will have materials for these activities set up where you can pick them up and construct the newspaper pots and/or the accordion butterflies. You can drop them back off the same day at the table. Paper Pots: These seedling pots are a wonderful and Earth friendly way to start seeds! The Garden will use these in their Nursery! Materials: newspaper, scissors, and a small can. Instructions: 1. Grab two pages of newspaper (so you have a four-sheet stack). Cut the newspaper into thirds lengthwise, giving you three long strips. 2. On the end closest to you, lay the can on its side across the strip of newspaper. Leave about 1 inch hanging off the end of the can. 3. Roll the can along the newspaper until it's loosely wrapped all the way around. (Loose being key for easy removal of the can later). 4. Fold the edges of the newspaper down over the can, and work your way around in a circle until all the edges are folded over firmly. They don't have to be perfect; you can just smush the paper down with your fingers. It's also fine if there is a small hole where the folds meet in the middle - that just provides extra drainage. 5. Slide the can out and you've got a thrifty and biodegradable seedling pot! Accordion Butterflies: Accordion Butterfly Project Share the magic of metamorphosis as you change catalogues, newspaper of craft paper into one of the most beautiful insects! This project will teach art, paper folding, and science. Butterflies are a fascinating creature for all ages, from a tiny egg, this insect goes through a marvelous transformation of life. You can transform just about any paper into a beautiful decoration! The children coming to the Garden to the education classes will use pipe cleaners to make these templated into butterflies. Materials: Catalogues, magazines, newspaper or craft paper, scissors, marker for tracing template, template. Instructions: 1. Print off the template entitled "Accordion Butterfly Template." 2. Trace the template onto the paper and cut it out. |
