Event Description
Volunteers arrive at 4:00pm for orientation. All new volunteers must be on time for orientation.
Volunteers will assist with set-up for the evening and greet and visit with new guests while waiting for orientation.
After orientation (4:30pm) volunteers continue greeting incoming guests and offer conversation until transportation for the guests arrive (between 5:15-5:30pm).
Though other duties might arise, the main focus for volunteers is to visit with our guests to help them feel welcome. Volunteers will be in the room with guests while staff handle administrative duties. Your help is central to our mission of "holy hospitality" - having people present to listen to and talk with our guests during their wait helps them know this is a place where they are safe, welcome, and treated with respect. Thank you for helping us serve our guests in such an important way!

Sitting and having a conversation with someone might not seem like something that should be considered a "volunteer duty" but it makes a huge difference in the day of someone who has been overlooked, ignored, and dismissed all day, and it helps our staff handle the day-to-day operations knowing that volunteers are helping the guests feel loved.
By 6pm all guests have departed to congregations for shelter for the evening. Volunteers help clean and ready the space for the next day.

A brief reflection time is offered at the end to share your experience and ask any questions.

PLEASE NOTE:
Volunteers are an important piece of our nightly process. We depend on volunteers to attend and complete shifts. If you sign up but are unable to attend your volunteer shift, please cancel your registration as soon as possible to make room for waitlisted volunteers.

PARKING: The parking lot is owned by an outside company and is a pay lot. After 4pm, volunteers may ask for a parking code from the front desk to use at the payment kiosk. There is also metered parking on Exchange Street.
