About
Dia de los Muertos Reverse Parade
Memphis Brooks Museum of Art and Cazateatro Bilingual Theatre Group are partnering to organize a free, socially distanced 4th Annual Dia de los Muertos celebration on Saturday, October 24th from 12:00pm to 4:00pm.
Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a traditional Mexican holiday that celebrates and honors friends and family members who have died. The mission of the Memphis event is twofold: to preserve and communicate the cultural heritage of Dia de los Muertos and to strengthen the cultural identity of Memphis’ Latino community.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s event will look a little different than it has in recent years. Members of the community will drive through Overton Park to enjoy the costumed performers, music, altars, and other festivities that will be stationed along the parade route – hence the “reverse parade.”
Volunteers are needed to assist with the flow of traffic through the parade and to assist in general safety and efficiency of the event. Tee shirts will be provided for volunteers upon arrival while supplies last.
Masks will be required for volunteers. Social distancing + CDC guidelines will be adhered to.
Based on the CDC guidelines, we are asking you the following questions before you sign up to volunteer:
- Have you been exposed to someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19? See the CDC’s risk assessment guidance.
- Do you have symptoms consistent with COVID-19? Symptoms can include a cough or shortness of breath or at least two of the following: Fever, Chills, Repeated shaking with chills, Muscle pain, Headache, Sore throat, New loss of taste or smell. See the CDC’s symptom information.
If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, we ask you not to register. We are doing all we can to align with best practices and keep our community healthy.
